((Office of the Chief Science Officer - Deck 3))

Lovar: Well, before you got here I was digging through some of the records
that the Federation has of the colony, what little I could find at least.
Mostly just records and reports sent back to Earth, received years after it=
s
disappearance.

Ensign Alieth nodded briefly as she continued to skim over her PADD.

Alieth: We are talking about the Vel Maijan Colony. It was formally
established in the year 2159 according to the computation of the Earth at
that time and declared officially lost five years later, in 2164.

=20

Pandorn: Anything in 2164 worth noting? Any unusual disturbances in the
system at the time?

Turner/Lovar: Response? =20

=20

Alieth: The initial reports are of little relevance. The colony was
established on a Minshara-class planet with similar conditions to Earth.
Nevertheless, once the colony was settled, some reports indicate
discrepancies between it and the human Homeworld. Some of these are: A weak
magnetosphere, which made Val Maijan strongly influenced by the incidence o=
f
solar winds in its system. Magnetization was more noticeable close to the
surface for unknown reasons.

=20

Pandorn: Could a shift in the magnetic field account for the magnetosphere
being weak?

=20

Turner/Lovar: Response? =20

=20

Alieth: It is plausible, but there are reports that other class M planets
have a higher electromagnetic radiation at the surface due to their mineral
richness.=20

=20

Krindo rubbed his chin thoughtfully. Didn't seem like much to be learned
there. But then, science wasn't actually a strong suit for him. The real
question is how an entire system could have been lost and then found over
200 years later and what it could mean for everyone.

=20

Turner/Lovar: Response

She nodded briefly before she proceeded reading.

=20

Alieth: There are reports of unusual weather events for the settlers since
the first reports, but they may be related to that difference in the
magnetosphere or to the lack of adaptation of this people to their new
environment... Or with whatever made the planet disappear.

=20

Turner/Lovar: Response

=20

The historical records were a start, but they don't give the whole picture.
But they have something now, the historical record doesn't.

=20

Pandorn: We might get a better idea of what happened via the distress call.
Is it automated or still a live broadcast?

=20

Turner/Alieth/Lovar: Response

=20

Pandorn: For all they know, this is still 200 years ago and this just
started happening to them. Let's hear it.

=20

Turner/Alieth/Lovar: Response

=20

The signal came through the speakers sounding like sandpaper being rubbed o=
n
gravel. Only a few words were even intelligible, almost like they were an
afterthought.

=20

Unknown Voice: *static* To the....*static*...we need
assis...*static*...underground....*burst of static*...lightning.

=20

Pandorn: Can we try to clean that up a bit?

=20

Turner/Alieth/Lovar: Response

=20

The signal, while still a bit degraded, was barely discernable, not knowing
the race or even gender of the speaker. But, It wasn't who said it, it was
the message itself that caused Krindo's ears to perk up.

=20

Unknown Voice: *crackling* To the Federation...this is *static* We need
assistance. *crackling* Planet becoming uninhabitable...::severe
interference:: ...took refuge underground...sky filled with
lightning...massive energy surge...*static then silence*

=20

Pandorn: Well that's unexpected.

=20

Turner/Alieth/Lovar: Response

=20

Pandorn: That's what the report said. Pre-Federation, so they shouldn't eve=
n
know about us. Unless someone has interfered with them 200 years ago. Can w=
e
identify the sender?

=20

Turner/Alieth/Lovar: Response

=20

A comms channel opened from the bridge. Captain Kells seemed a bit eager fo=
r
an update.

=20

Kells: =3D/\=3D Kells to Pandorn. =3D/\=3D

=20

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D Pandorn here, Captain. =3D/\=3D

=20

Kells: =3D/\=3D What has your team found, Commander? Do we know anything mo=
re
about our vanished world? =3D/\=3D

=20

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D The colony might have undergone some sort of cataclysm, e=
ither
now, or in the past.. The magnetosphere is severely weakened exposing the
planet to solar winds and other radiation. Our opinion is the transition in
time may have caused it. =3D/\=3D

=20

Kells: =3D/\=3D Intriguing. Did the call tell you anything? =3D/\=3D

=20

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D Uh...it did actually. You did say the colony was
pre-Federation, didn't you? =3D/\=3D

=20

Kells: =3D/\=3D Response =3D/\=3D

=20

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D We were unable to ID the sender since the nebula ionized =
and
fragmented the signal, but, ::pause:: I think you should hear the cleaned
up version yourself. =3D/\=3D ::plays the message::

=20

There was a long pause as CaptIain Kells was chewing on the message.=20

=20

Kells: =3D/\=3D Response =3D/\=3D

=20

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D That is the 64 thousand credit question, sir. They should=
n't
know of us. Or be able to contact us at any rate due to the nebula. We'll
need to get close enough to see what is going on there. =3D/\=3D

=20

Kells: =3D/\=3D Response =3D/\=3D

=20

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D Yes, sir. Understood. Pandorn, out =3D/\=3D
