(( First Officer's Office, Deck 2, USS Atlantis ))

Ilana stood for a second outside the first officer's office, ensuri=
ng that=20
her uniform was straight before pressing the chime on the door. She was=20
greeted by one word.

Serala: Come.

=20

Ilana entered the office and stood at attention. It felt strange, even a=20
little silly. Even after four years at the Academy, Ilana hadn't qu=
ite got=20
used to the rigidness of certain aspects of Starfleet.

Ganarvuss: Ensign Ganarvuss reporting, ma'am.

Serala: At ease, Ensign. As I am sure you are aware, my name is Lieutenant=
=20
Commander Serala and I am your First Officer. I thought it would be a good=
=20
idea for me to start meeting the new officers as they come aboard.

Ilana gave a short nod.

Ganarvuss: A prudent measure, Commander.

Serala: Have a seat, Ensign. I understand you were onboard during the=20
drill. What did you think? And be honest. Feel free to speak your mind.

=20

Ilana took the offered seat. She'd wondered if this would come up a=
nd was=20
glad that it had. She had a few thoughts on the matter, despite her recent=
=20
arrival on the ship.

Ganarvuss: I was thrown off by it, ma'am. I'd only arrived =
on the ship=20
shortly before it was conducted and I hadn't even checked in with=
=20
Lieutenant Hyden to receive my clearances. As such, there was little I=20
could do. I spent most of my time pacing deck 4 to ensure that no intruders=
=20
were there. That having been said, it seems that most of the crew was=20
unaware of it and that seems excessive, given the magnitude of the drill. =
=20
Having the entire ship think that crewmates are being killed right in front=
=20
of them and that the ship is about to explode seems like a good way to fill=
=20
up the counselor's schedule for the rest of the year.

Serala: Thank you, Ensign. I appreciate your honesty. And if you could make=
=20
any changes, what would they be?

=20

Ilana frowned and rested her chin in her hand. She'd thought about =
issues=20
and benefits of the drill but hadn't got far into improving it. It =
was=20
hardly her place as the greenie.

Ganarvuss: I suppose=E2=80=A6 breaking the drill up. I think there'=
s a lot of value=20
in surprise drills but this one went too far. If there were more=20
unannounced evacuation drills, just to see how fast people can scurry to=20
the pods or intruder drills that test response time but stop short of=20
making people think their buddy just got shot and killed with a disruptor.=
=20
If we want to test something like phaser proficiency under pressure, we=20
could do that through competition rather than duress.

Serala: ?

Ganarvuss: I grew up playing basketball and volleyball and I've alw=
ays felt=20
that competition is a good substitute for real danger. There's plen=
ty of=20
pressure in a game, even if there's nothing at stake beyond losing =
to a=20
rival.

Serala: ?

Ganarvuss: I'd say it's better to let people know about a p=
erformance test=20
and maybe even make it a competition. Tests can be more than just=20
pass/fail. You can learn from them too. If you think the ship might explode=
=20
if you take a chance, you won't. If you know that all that'=
s at risk is=20
your department's performance or being beat by another team, you=E2=
=80=99ll be more=20
likely to try it. The more risks you take in drills, the more you learn=20
about how and when to take them when it comes down to the wire, rather than=
=20
being too afraid to do anything or too reckless to stop and look at=20
different options.

=20

It occurred to Ilana that she might have overstepped her purview as a=20
freshly graduated ensign. Her experiences in life likely had little in=20
common with the kinds of situations she was going to find herself in during=
=20
her time with Starfleet. However, Serala had asked for her honest opinion=
=20
and Ilana had given it.

Serala: ?
