((Journs's Quarters, USS Atlantis))

Just as she got out of the shower and changed into her uniform, readying
herself for a day's work, the call came through.

Thoran: =3D/\=3D Thoran to all senior staff. Briefing in ten minutes. =3D/\=
=3D

Journs: oO Good timing. Oo

She was more than a little curious about their mission. She hoped it wasn=
't
another situation like they'd just dealt with on Valcaria. Maybe a
diplomatic mission. It would certainly be a nice change of pace. Since
coming to the Atlantis, she'd been shot more times than she had abo=
ard any
of her previous postings. A wry, unamused grin twisted her lips, she
supposed that had something to do with Toryn. He always managed to attract
trouble.

Shaking her head, she exited her quarters and headed for the briefing room.

((Observation Lounge, Deck 1))

She was so lost in thought that she didn't notice at first. But a l=
ittle
sound caught her attention and she looked up, surprised to find T'S=
aara
also present. Given Serala's devotion to professionalism, she assum=
ed that
there hadn't been a choice. If she'd been available, she wo=
uld have been
more than happy to watch the infant. Lately, she'd looked for any e=
xcuse to
hold the little one.

She took a seat in the empty chair beside Commander G'Renn, her gaz=
e
flickering to the little one and she smiled.

Thoran: Response

Serala: My apologies, sir. I couldn't find a sitter on such short n=
otice.
Most of them are in this room.

Thoran / Any: Responses

Serala took her seat and sat T'Saara beside her.

Journs: oO If she gets too fussy, I'll offer to take her outside un=
til she
calms down. Serala really should be present for this. Oo

It wouldn't be a hardship. In fact, a part of her lit up at hearing=
the
little girl's silly noises. She somehow managed to contain the wide=
grin
threatening to break across her lips at the very thought. Folding her hands
together, she leaned forward with interest, wondering what their latest
orders were.

Serala: :: to T'Saara :: Now be a good girl for mommy.

At that comment, she couldn't hold back the grin and had to bring h=
er hand
up, pretending to cough into it.

Serala: Sorry. Not very professional of me.

Thoran: Response

Any: Responses

Ishka said nothing, giving her friend an encouraging smile. No one ever
said motherhood was easy. Her non Al-Leyan classmates had talked about it
often enough, a couple of them being parents themselves. She was certain
that not a single person in the room would have a thing to say about it.

Thoran: Response

Hyden: Oh yes, Sir I am currently redrawing the security plans highlighted
in my report.

Thoran: Response

Hyden: Yes, Sir I will take care of it.

Thoran: Thank you all for being so prompt. Help yourself to the
refreshments.

She gazed longingly at the nearby replicator, considering a mug of Al-Leyan
spiced tea, but she didn't want to interrupt the meeting. A glance =
at
T'Saara revealed that the infant was calm for the moment. Seeing th=
is, she
relaxed and refocused her attention on what the Captain was saying.

Thoran: Now I am sure you are all wondering why I have called you here. The
Freeworlds Council are holding a trade conference on Illara Prime and have
invited us to attend.

She arched an eyebrow, wondering if the Captain hadn't read her min=
d
earlier. Though she suspected much of the crew felt the way she did. They
loved what they did, but a routine mission was nice every so often. It
broke up the exhaustion of leaping from one adventure to the next with
little downtime.

She paused. A trade conference implied trade. Would it just be a small team
going down? What would they be trading? Something told her this was less
about trade for the Atlantis crew and more about brokering relationships
and goodwill. Making friends with the local powers that be definitely
wouldn't be a bad thing, especially after the less-than-friendly re=
ception
they'd gotten when they were last on Valcaria.

Thoran: The purpose of this conference from what I understand is to bring
together several different factions and establish new trade relations with
the Freeworlds.

Ishka nodded. That made sense. The only species she'd met so far we=
re the
Valcarians and the Caaradians. She was curious what other species were
members of this Freeworlds Council.

Any: Responses

Hyden: Well you say several factions so I am supposing our enemies may be
present?

Kiax: Do we know who else they've invited, besides ourselves?

Thoran: An excellent question. From what I have been able to ascertain the
Freeworlds Council have invited representatives from the Caraadian Noble
Houses, Ferengi Commerce Authority, Romulan Republic and even the Valcarian
Imperial Republic.

McKnight: Let's hope just the good Romulans show up.

Ishka arched an eyebrow at the comment, her gaze flickering to Serala for a
moment. She had no idea what McKnight had meant by it, so she chose to
assume it was a harmless comment. Though she wondered what was going
through Serala's mind. If she was recalling correctly, their first
officer's mother was an ambassador of some sort for the Republic. F=
rom the
sounds of it, there was a chance they'd be seeing her again.

Kiax: Sounds like we're up against some fairly aggressive competiti=
on. What
have we got to bring to the negotiating table?

T'Saara: :: happily :: ggwwabble maaa fu

Serala: I don't think she was asking you, Little Bean. But thanks f=
or the
suggestion.

Shaking her head, she laughed softly, her gaze lifting to meet Toryn=E2=80=
=99s. The
smile became a smirk.

Journs: ~ Too bad you're so nervous around little ones. Looks like =
she's a
regular riot. ~

Raga: ~ Response ~

Dropping her gaze from Toryn's, she refocused her attention on the
briefing, pulling the PADD lying on the table in front of her closer so she
could make notes. She had no idea what role she was to play in the mission,
so it was best to be prepared.

Hyden: From what you're saying it looks like we will need to keep a=
sharp
eye out. We have vipers mixed with more vipers in a pit that we have to
step into.

Journs: ::pauses:: I wonder if we have anything in Sickbay that might be of
interest. Medical tools always seem to be a valuable commodity.

Any: Responses

Kiax: I can probably get my hands on some physical goods for us to use as
trade samples before we leave. Just in case they want to inspect what we
have before initiating trade=E2=80=A6 Currency might be a bit of an issue t=
hough.

McKnight: I'm sure depending on the price, we can get authorization
to...acquire the appropriate amount of funds.

Journs: ::nods:: If anything, we can always use the old-fashioned
system--goods for goods.

Any: Responses

Serala: Since the Valcarians have been invited, sir, am I to understand
that means Ambassador Dels'an? And if so, will she be travelling wi=
th us
again, or does she have her own transport?

Ambassador Dels'an? She hadn't had much contact with the Am=
bassador during
the last mission. If she was recalling correctly, most of it had been near
the tail end as they were getting beamed back to the Atlantis.

Thoran: Response

Hyden: With all the factions you named I saw a possible power struggle with
us in the middle. Negotiations only last as long as the status quo stays in
each faction's favor. If that changes this situation could turn ugly and
faster than we would want it too. Who do we have in the terms of allies?

McKnight: Security would be on guard considering those attending. We need
to be extra careful.

Journs: ::grimaces and mutters:: Sounds like a tough crowd.

Knight: Illara Prime is known for its senate comprised of roughly a hundred
different commercial companies, the appointed governor will likely be
responsible for overseeing the event. Will we be attending in any capacity
over than as Federation representatives?

Thoran: Response

Matthieu: Valcarians, sir?

She glanced at the newer officer and paused, pondering how to explain it to
him. Her perceptions were certainly colored given that her first time
meeting them had been under less than ideal circumstances. She glanced at
Toryn before continuing.

Journs: A large power in the region. Their republic is comprised of
hundreds of worlds. If I'm recalling correctly, they're in =
an expansionist
phase of their development. The ones that I've encountered were ver=
y
militaristic in their thinking and their demeanor. Much of what they did
was about control.

Thoran / Mattheiu: Responses

Serala / Any: Responses

Journs: ::pauses and turns to Thoran:: I assume, sir, that we won't=
all be
going down at once? That we'll be sending a team?

Thoran: Response

Journs: ::nods:: Yes, sir. ::pauses:: If I might, sir...I'd like to
volunteer to be a part of whatever group goes.

Thoran: Response

Journs: ::smiles:: Doctors aren't just good at medicine. Back home,=
my
Haemachuo siblings would come to me at times to mediate their disagreements=
.
