flashed bright for a split second then glowed with a dim red light, barely
noticeable unless you were right on top of it. It was there to stay unless
an earthquake or weapons fire disloges it.

The quartet of officers began pushing deeper into the cave system. The pat=

was uneven in spots, which slowed them down a bit, in case someone took a
tumble. It was like some of the caves back home in Minnesota, Krindo almost
breaking his leg tripping on a sharp downward slope near the lake behind hi=

home. That would have been embarrassing. After a few hundred meters, they
came to what his tricorder indicated as the entrance to the tunnel system.
Something about them was strange, Krindo didn't need the tricorder that
Geoff was using to tell him that.

Krindo scanned the shape of the tunnel as well, the light from his hand
beacon lighting up the area in a slow, deliberate path. Captain Brell was
right. The walls were a bit too unevenly formed. This wasn't the wprk of an=

kind of excavation equipment the colonists could have used, either now or
200 years past. Something else made this tunnel. =20

aluminum and oxygen in those marks. Which was odd, since it wasn't
registering on the environmental sensors in the tricorder.

Teller: =3D/\=3D Interesting. If there's more carbon dioxide in here, the
original colonists may have been able to trap a bit more heat. ::Geoff
glanced at his tricorder - the ambient temperature was coming up slightly,
and the more exotic gasses in the caves atmosphere were diminishing to safe=

levels.:: It's possible there's a thermocline in here somewhere - we get
below that layer and the environment may become a lot more livable. I thin=

we're on the right track. =3D/\=3D

It grew increasingly narrow as they went deeper into the tunnel. Geoff
stopped about 1 km from where the tunnel started and opened a comm channel.
It was time to check in with the boss. Something Krindo had done many a tim=

on away missions.

and blatted, unable to get a signal out. He tried a few more times with no
results. Geoff cursed inside his helmet and clicked back over to the teams

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D We may be too far down in the tunnel. That and with the
composition of the rock face, I would suggest extreme caution from here on
in, unless we get back closer to the surface. =3D/\=3D=20

A proximity alarm in his hemet indicated someting was on the move, closing
in on them fast. And it was huge, according to the deep rumbling and heavy
vibrations shaking the tunnel causing small particles of the rock to fall
around them. Whatever it was, it was huge.

Teller: =3D/\=3D Contact front, 425m and closing. Defensive formation one,=
now.
=3D/\=3D

Krindo motioned to Greaves and moved to the front quickly and dropped to a
knee, phaser already out and pointed ahead. Greaves was right beside him.

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D Hold your fire until we see whatever it is and it attacks=

The rumbling crew louder, and it sounded more like...digging? Like an
industrial size excavator was being used but there was no distinct hum of
machinery. This was unsettling. Whatever it was, was now in visual range an=
