Lieutenant Lorian Lovar - Bugging Out

2020-05-12 04:17:22

((Subterranean Tunnels, Vel Maijan))

They began walking further into the cave, and eventually that grainy ground=
began to feel a bit more solid.
Teller: =3D/\=3D Mr. Lovar, how's the environment. We sti=
ll going to get a tan if we take off the suits? =3D/\=3D

Greaves: =3D/\=3D It'd be a real treat if you said yes Lieute=
nant.My thighs are already starting to get chapped in this thin=

Lovar: =3D/\=3D Radiation levels seem constant, no change yet. =3D/\=3D

Brell: =3D/\=3D I know they don't seem fully even, as if machine worked, bu=
t does this tunnel have a worked feeling to anyone else? =3D/\=3D

Teller: =3D/\=3D I think you're right, Captain, but there's no way so=
me colonists did this. It almost looks...I don't know...carved, someh=
ow. Eyes up people - look for any signs of recent use. Could be=
we're not the first ones here. =3D/\=3D

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D Aye, sir. =3D/\=3D ::to Greaves:: =3D/\=3D Heavy stun, Li=
eutenant. We want to be sure anything that attacks is neutralized, not dead=
. =3D/\=3D

Greaves: =3D/\=3D Roger that sir. Ready for anything.:Pausing t=
o look at the walls::If I didn't know that these tunnel=
s weren't perfectly straight, I'd say it could have been an=
orbital strike from a starship's phaser bank at some point in the =

Brell: =3D/\=3D Increased signs of wear even older signs could point us tow=
ards our goals. =3D/\=3D

Teller: =3D/\=3D Agreed. ::Teller's tricorder pinged a movement readi=
ng from ahead, but it vanished once he tried to lock in on it.:: Lets keep =
moving. =3D/\=3D

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D Now this is odd. I detect traces of aluminum and oxygen i=
n the marks on the wall where is seems that part has been removed. It seems=
to have had a bite taken out of them. =3D/\=3D

Lorian continued to monitor the radiation. He couldn't quite hone in on a s=
tarting position. He became curious and walked closer to a wall. The levels=
remained constant. There went that theory, it didn't seem to come from the=
walls. He put his gloved hand on the wall as they walked. Smooth. Uneven, =
but smooth. Ever so curious.
Greaves: =3D/\=3D Sir, it looks like the tunnel starts to get pretty narrow=
going forward.I'd say we'll be lucky to get tw=
o people that could walk abreast of each other.I'll con=
tinue to take point, but it might get cramped pretty quick. =3D/\=3D

Teller: =3D/\=3D Response? =3D/\=3D

Brell: =3D/\=3D I've been reading a steady increase of carbon dioxi=
de in the cavern, its small but notable. =3D/\=3D

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D Something lives down here? =3D/\=3D

Greaves: =3D/\=3D Could be from our suits dumping excess CO2. =3D/\=3D

Lovar: =3D/\=3D These suits don't dump CO2, they use zeolite absorption=C2=
=A0beds. We shouldn't be having any effect. =3D/\=3D

Teller: =3D/\=3D Interesting. If there's more carbon dioxide in here,=
the original colonists may have been able to trap a bit more heat. :=
:Geoff glanced at his tricorder - the ambient temperature was coming up sli=
ghtly, and the more exotic gasses in the caves atmosphere were diminishing =
to safer levels.:: It's possible there's a thermocline in here somewh=
ere - we get below that layer and the environment may become a lot more liv=
able. I think we're on the right track. =3D/\=3D

Greaves:=3D/\=3D Just say the word sir, and I swear I'l=
l make this EV suit disappear. I'll be the group's canary i=
n a heartbeat when the time comes. =3D/\=3D
Lovar: =3D/\=3D We still have to worry about that radiation. Something has =
to be creating it, I'm just not sure what... =3D/\=3D
Brell/Pandorn: =3D/\=3D Responses =3D/\=3D

The group continued down the tunnel, marching two by two with Teller in the=
front. Lorian kept at his job, but the levels just wouldn't budge. He coul=
dn't stress to himself how irregular this was. Whatever created the beta pl=
us radiation had to have been doing it for a very long time.
Teller: =3D/\=3D Teller to Thor, come in please. =3D/\=3D ::His comm badge =
chirped and blatted, unable to get a signal out. He tried a few more =
times with no results. Geoff cursed inside his helmet and clicked bac=
k over to the teams channel:: =3D/\=3D I can't raise the ship.=3D/\=3D=C2=

Pandorn: =3D/\=3D We may be too far down in the tunnel. That and with the c=
omposition of the rock face, I would suggest extreme caution from here on i=
n, unless we get back closer to the surface. =3D/\=3D

Greaves: =3D/\=3D Lieutenant Commander, it looks like there's=
a significant amount of basalt in the walls around us now.I=E2=
=80=99m no geologist, but one thing I know is that basalt and lead play hav=
oc on communications. =3D/\=3D
Lovar: =3D/\=3D I'd say that's probably it, unless the radiation is messing=
with our equipment. I'd be hoping for the lead. =3D/\=3D
Brell/Teller: =3D/\=3D Responses =3D/\=3D

There was a sudden beep from his tricorder, as if it was excited to see him=
. The radiation levels...
Teller: =3D/\=3D Contact front, 425m and closing. Defensive formation=
one, now. =3D/\=3D

Lorian got into formation, it had been a while but he still remembered.
Pandorn: =3D/\=3D Hold your fire until we see whatever it is and it attacks=
, Lieutenant. =3D/\=3D

Greaves:=3D/\=3D Will do sir. Not until the whites of their eye=
Lovar: =3D/\=3D Sir! Beta plus radiation levels are increasing! =3D/\=3D
Brell: =3D/\=3D Response =3D/\=3D

Greaves: =3D/\=3D 75 meters and closing sir!Whatever it i=
s, it's coming through the rock! ::Checking his tricorder again:: 3=
0 meters!

Lorian was still stunned by the radiation, but the shadow of something in t=
he distance snapped him back to reality.
Pandorn: =3D/\=3D What in blazes...? =3D/\=3D

It was definitely an insect or from an insect-like domain. Pincers, large, =
protruding jaw shape, four limbs on what seemed to be a thorax for walking.=
It was objectively horrifying. He loved it.
Greaves:=3D/\=3DVisual! =3D/\=3D
There was a second sound... underneath them?
Greaves:=3D/\=3D Wait, there's two of them! Second is t=
en meters and closing, two meters below us! =3D/\=3D

oOCan these things dig? Didtheymake the tunnels?Oo

Brell/Teller: =3D/\=3D Response =3D/\=3D

Lovar: =3D/\=3D Woa- =3D/\=3D
The floor in front of him opened up, sucking in Greaves and Pandorn. Lorian=
almost lost his balance, but managed to regain his composure. He looked do=
wn, but was unable to see anything. Anything other than another creature cr=
awling up the tunnel.

Lovar: ::to Brell:: =3D/\=3D Sir, I highly recommend we back up a little. =
