((Surface, Vel Maijan))

MacKenzie: Alright, everyone. Keep your eyes and ears open =E2=80=93 look f=
or=20
anything that might give us some clues as to what happened here. Don=E2=80=
=99t=20
stray too far, and remember where we parked.

=20

Parker: Dar, take the right flank. I'll take the left. Mac, Quen, W=
ilkins=20
stay between us. All right, let's move out=E2=80=A6

=20

Deena adjusted her tricorder to scan for cellular decay and low-level life=
=20
forms as they approached the edge of the colony. If anything remained of=20
the colony, it was unlikely to be alive. And if it was alive, it would have=
=20
to be hardy. Simple. The very edge of what could reasonably be defined as=
=20
=E2=80=9Cliving=E2=80=9D.=20

=20

Quen: I'm not picking up any signs of life - not so much as a liche=
n. Not=20
even signs of decay=E2=80=A6=20

=20

MacKenzie removed her tricorder as well and studied its readings.

=20

MacKenzie: Well, that in itself is a clue =E2=80=93 whatever happened here =
must=20
have happened instantly.

=20

Dar: If it happened instantly how did the Colonists avoid getting caught in=
=20
whatever it was then? Or did they?

Wilkins: We won't know the answers to that question until we find t=
he=20
colonists.

Parker: Response

=20

Something sticking out of a wall attracted Deena's attention. The c=
olor=20
blended in almost perfectly with the prefabricated structure - but=20
something in the shape didn't quite fit=E2=80=A6 She detached the p=
robe from her=20
tricorder, cautiously beginning a close scan of the Mystery Lump.

Quen: Whatever this was, was organic. :: she reattached the probe with a=20
click:: Petrified wood.

MacKenzie: Interesting, but not surprising. I'm sure the colonists =
would=20
have chosen someplace that resembled Earth =E2=80=93 or, at the very least,=
would=20
have been more habitable than this=E2=80=A6

Quen: I believe it was a class-M planet. ::pause:: Was.

=20

Wilkins: I'm not reading any organic life signs near us.

=20

Parker: Response

=20

MacKenzie: Ensign Wilkins, any information during your studies that might=
=20
prove helpful?

=20

Wilkins: Not too much information about the colony itself. Yet, we do know=
=20
the bulk of the colony were scientists. We'll need to figure out wh=
ere they=20
went off to. That is, if they survived after sending out the distress call.

=20

MacKenzie: Indeed. Let's get samples of everything we can =E2=80=93=
sand/soil,=20
anything that sticks out. You never know what would provide a clue. If you=
=20
need more resources, we can always make a trip back to the Argo.

=20

Wilkins: The petrified wood could give us some information how this=20
happened. The soil could be analyzed to determine the level of radiation in=
=20
the ground.

Deena flaked some of the stone-that-used-to-be-wood into a sample tube,=20
cataloging her find in her tricorder before scooping up a tubeful of sand=
=20
from the base of the building.

The group moved deeper into the =E2=80=9Ctown=E2=80=9D, silent for the mome=
nt. The wind=20
whipped its way across the open desert, whistling between the buildings,=20
seemingly displeased by the obstacles. Were it not for their presence, one=
=20
would be reluctant to believe this world had ever been inhabited. As it=20
appeared, time and the unknown cataclysm had erased any other trace of=20
life. MacKenzie called forward to the two scouts.=20

=20

MacKenzie: Major, Ensign =E2=80=93 anything on your sights?

Dar: Everything is clear this side so far Doctor.

=20

Parker: Response

=20

MacKenzie: Major, what are your impressions so far?

=20

Parker: Response

Deena knelt to procure a sample of sparklier-looking sand centered in the=
=20
space between two buildings. Mineral deposit? Evidence of an asteroid=20
impact? Curious enough to warrant further investigation, at any rate.

Dar: Doc, Commander I think I found a colonist.

=20

Wilkins scanned it with her tricorder. Deena finished cataloging the latest=
=20
sample and walked over to join the group around a mostly-crushed bone. A=20
skull, from the shape of the intact pieces.

=20

Parker: response

=20

MacKenzie: What've we got, Ensign?

=20

Wilkins: Appears to be a human female. She died instantly. Probably to very=
=20
high levels of radiation. Or perhaps to whatever phenomenon that caused the=
=20
temporal displacement. Hard to place a date of death without some soil=20
samples, but I would say that it is recently judging by how the skull is=20
sitting on the surface.

Deena isolated a skull fragment and began a more detailed scan. From the=20
size and shape, the tricorder extrapolated that the skull belonged to an=20
adult human female. However - and Deena noted this with equal intrigue and=
=20
concern - the outer layers had been largely eaten away, leaving only a thin=
=20
film covering the brittle, spongy inner layer. No wonder it broke so=20
easily...

=20

Dar: Seems we found someone.

Parker: response

=20

Quen: Compact bone's all but gone=E2=80=A6 Evenly removed, I might =
add=E2=80=A6 oO That's=20
basically impossible=E2=80=A6 Oo I'm not reading any cell structures or DN=
A=20
fragments. Or protein traces. In fact, ::Her brow furrowed, taking the=20
readings again:: I'm not picking up any organic molecules here eith=
er! It's=20
all been reduced to minerals...

=20

MacKenzie: :putting her hands on her hips:: Yikes. Raises a hell of a lot=
=20
more questions than answers=E2=80=A6

Wilkins: I'm just hoping that we don't find the entire colo=
ny to have been=20
wiped out. Yet, someone had to been alive to send out a distress single.

=20

Dar: response

=20

MacKenzie: We could theorize all day about what happened=E2=80=A6 whether s=
ome were=20
killed instantly or some made it to safety, whether several hundred years=
=20
have passed or if it all happened recently, but let's keep our eye =
on our=20
assignment =E2=80=93 figure out what happened to the planet and what set th=
is all=20
in motion.

=20

Deena isolated a small amount of bone dust and gently transferred it to a=
=20
sample tube.

Quen: And so far, she's our only clue...

=20

Parker: response

=20

Wilkins: We might be able to find some equipment inside the colony that=20
recorded what happened here. If we are lucky enough that it survived this=
=20
temporal displacement.

=20

Addison was interrupted by the comm.

=20

Brodie: =3D/\=3D Thor to MacKenzie. =3D/\=3D

=20

MacKenzie: =3D/\=3D MacKenzie here. Go ahead, Commander. =3D/\=3D

=20

Brodie: =3D/\=3D What's the initial situation on the ground, Doctor=
? How's the=20
radiation? =3D/\=3D

=20

MacKenzie: =3D/\=3D Not good. Anything goes wrong with our suits, and we=E2=
=80=99re=20
toast. We found a human skull =E2=80=93 likely a colonist. Whatever did thi=
s=20
probably happened quickly. =3D/\=3D=20

=20

Brodie: =3D/\=3D Not a good sign=E2=80=A6hopefully not one of things to com=
e. =3D/\=3D

=20

MacKenzie: =3D/\=3D Any word from Commander Teller's team? =3D/\=3D

=20

Brodie: =3D/\=3D We're just about to check in with them =E2=80=93 I=
'll let them know=20
what you've found. Proceed with caution and keep us updated. Thor o=
ut. =3D/\=3D

=20

MacKenzie sighed inaudibly to herself. Something didn't add up.

=20

MacKenzie: Quen, I want you to stay here and see what else you can uncover=
=E2=80=A6=20
See what you can find out about these remains=E2=80=A6 whether or not this =
guy was=20
out here by himself. And some environmental samples would be great, if=20
you've got time. Major, give her a hand and keep an eye on her.

=20

Deena smiled and tapped her case twice.

Quen: Already on it, Doctor.

Parker: Response

=20

MacKenzie: ::nodding:: Dar, Wilkins, you're with me. Let's =
go see if we can=20
find one of the labs. Any idea which direction?

=20

Dar/Wilkins: Responses

=20

MacKenzie: Great, let's go. Something about this doesn't si=
t quite right,=20
and I want to get to the bottom of it.

=20

As the group divided, Deena started a series of more detailed analytical=20
scans on the samples she'd taken. The skull couldn't just b=
e an enigma -=20
there had to be some useful information there=E2=80=A6 And whoever the skul=
l=20
belonged to was certainly not alone. To that end, they'd need a way=
to=20
locate others. Now there was a challenge within itself - how to locate=20
long-skeletonized remains in a fairly homogenous and largely monochromatic=
=20
environment. A =E2=80=98needle in a haystack' of epic proportions. =
Or so went the=20
human phrase. Deena found the situation more akin to the reverse: a search=
=20
for a piece of hay in a needlestack.

Quen: oO Mineralogical analysis? If it's good enough for transporters... Oo

If isolating and locking onto bone minerals was enough to successfully send=
=20
a person through a transporter, it should be more than enough to locate the=
=20
remains of any colonists. =E2=80=98Should' being the operative word=
=E2=80=A6 Wandering up=20
to one of the buildings, she scanned the chemical composition of the wall.=
=20
Theory (partially) confirmed...

Quen: Calcium phosphate=E2=80=A6

Parker: Response

Quen: Narrowing the tricorders' scanning parameters to detect calci=
um=20
phosphate deposits should point to the locations of any other skeletons.=20
I'm not picking it up in any of the other material around here.=20

Parker: Response
