*((Subterranean Tunnels, Vel Maijan))*

Geoff could feel his heart beginning to race as his team grabbed whatever=
=20
cover they could. Whatever was in the tunnel with them was moving with=20
incredible speed and his external microphones were picking up an unsettling=
=20
skittering and scuttling, distorted & echoing off the rounded tunnel=20
walls. His grip on his tricorder tightened as he drew his phaser and aimed=
=20
down the tunnel. The signals were diverging. =20

Greaves: =3D/\=3D Wait, there's two of them! Second is ten meters =
and closing,=20
two meters below us! =3D/\=3D

Brell: =3D/\=3D No life form matches on the tricorder =E2=80=A6 it can't ma=
ke out clear=20
readings, they have some kind of armor or chitin. =3D/\=3D

Geoff took a breath, calming himself in the moment before the action. He=
=20
could hear the heavy breathing of his team through the comm as each=20
prepared themselves for whatever was ahead. His tricorders increasingly=20
urgent proximity detector chimes turned into a single continuous tone. =20

The creature that emerged from the darkness in front of the team was the=20
stuff of childhood bad dreams. A large central body that seemed covered in=
=20
chitinous armored plating moved with incredible grace and ease in the=20
confines of the tunnel, for which of course it was the perfect size and=20
shape. On its forelegs, an array of long, savage looking claws seemed to=
=20
find purchase on every rock face, easily digging in to the solid stone with=
=20
each movement. Two perfectly black eyes sat a half meter behind a long,=20
prehensile snout that seemed to sniff the air constantly. Geoff was=20
immediately reminded of a story he'd been read in his youth, of ancient=20
people who tunneled deeply into the ground and hoarded their treasure. To=
=20
their ruin they had awoken something, and it's name always stuck in his=20
mind. =20

Teller: =3D/\=3D It's a damn dragon. =3D/\=3D

Lovar: =3D/\=3D Woa- =3D/\=3D

The tunnel floor a few meters in front of him collapsed without warning,=20
and both Krindo and Wes tumbled in, the lights of their suits tumbling down=
=20
into the darkness a few meters. The creature in front of them reared back=
=20
from the collapse as well as a painfully loud clicking and scratching noise=
=20
bounced around the tight, confused space. =20

Lovar: ::to Brell:: =3D/\=3D Sir, I highly recommend we back up a little. =
=3D/\=3D

Brell: =3D/\=3D Afraid we can't do that Lieutenant, we need to get =
down there=20
now! =3D/\=3D

Teller was about to speak when, with surprising adroitness, Captain Brell=
=20
began working his way down into the collapsed tunnel, trying to get between=
=20
the downed security team and another of the creatures. Geoff bit off a=20
curse inside his helmet and, with a glance towards Lt. Lovar, both slowly=
=20
moved down into the sub-tunnel. It only took them a few moments to hop=20
down, where they found Lt. Cmdr. Pandorn & 2nd Lt. Greaves sprawled on the=
=20
ground, but a quick check from his suit computer confirmed they were alive=
=20
and relatively unscathed, all things considered. Grabbing a handhold built=
=20
into the EVA suit pack, Teller slowly helped the men to their feet as=20
Captain Brell did his best to make formal introductions. =20

Brell: =3D/\=3D We mean you no harm. =3D/\=3D

The punishingly loud chirps and clicks that sprang from the creature were a=
=20
physical force in the cramped sub-tunnel...but it didn't rush at them or=20
Captain Brell. Geoff decided to trust the senior officers experience and=
=20
instincts while Krindo and Wes got re-orientated. =20

Teller: =3D/\=3D Krindo, Wes, I need you both back on your feet and on guar=
d. =20
We've...made contact..::Geoff glanced over to the blue man in a space suit=
=20
talking slowly to a dragon, and shrugged::...I think. Lt. Lovar, can you=
=20
very discreetly take some readings on Smaug over there? =3D/\=3D

Pandorn/Lovar/Greaves: =3D/\=3D responses =3D/\=3D

Teller: =3D/\=3D Captain Brell sir, I appreciate your efforts but you're=20
exposing yourself to enormous risk. You mind backing off a bit and letting=
=20
us get in front of you? =3D/\=3D

Brell: ::Starfleet channel.:: =3D/\=3D Risk, is part of the job. I=E2=80=
=99d rather=20
get attacked then let us attack something that is only acting out fear.=20
=3D/\=3D ::Open air comm:: =3D/\=3D We, come without hostile intent. =3D/\=
=3D=20

Teller: =3D/\=3D Very well. Lt. Lovar, any chance you can help with our=20
translators? If Captain Brell can't communicate with these creatures we=20
could still be in a lot of trouble. Krindo - stick to the Captain like=20
glue - you're to drag him out of here if I say so. ::Teller noticed a=20
biomed alert in his suit:: Mr. Greaves, you doing alright? Your heart rate=
=20
is spiking. Trying upping your O2 mixture, it'll help. =3D/\=3D=20

Pandorn/Lovar/Greaves: =3D/\=3D responses =3D/\=3D

Cth'am/Orh'am: Response

With the first moments passing between the two groups without violence,=20
Teller began to relax fractionally. They couldn't effectively communicate=
=20
yet but it seemed like it might be possible. Geoff began wondering how'd=
=20
he explain this in his log when a thunderous rapport erupted from an=20
adjoining tunnel, somewhere to their right, hidden in the gloom. He spun=
=20
and his hand went to his phaser. =20

The creature was struck by something across it's fragile underbelly and=20
erupted into shrieking clicks and pops. With shocking speed it reared away=
=20
from Captain Brell and began skittering back down the tunnel, angrily=20
slamming its armored tail into the walls, collapsing them as it went,=20
quickly receding into the inky blackness. After less than a minute, the=20
echoing scratches of its passage disappeared. =20

A new set of lights, dim and yellow, lanced out of the tunnel mouth and=20
landed on Teller and his team. Geoff could make out humanoid figures in=20
what looked like ancient, cobbled together environmental suits, but little=
=20
else. He flipped his comm over to his suits external speakers and spoke=20
aloud. =20

Teller: =3D/\=3D I'm Lt. Cmdr. Geoffrey Teller from the Federation Starship=
=20
Thor. We're here in response to a distress call. Identify yourselves. =3D=
/\=3D

Flynn/Armiger: Response

Teller: =3D/\=3D That's correct, the United Federation Of Planets. Very=
=20
classy blue & white flag. Heard of it? =3D/\=3D=20
