=E2=80=9CTears Before Bedtime=E2=80=9D ((Makeshift Playroom, USS Thor)) Brodie: How are you feeling, Garth? Garth: ::hedging slightly:: I feel alright. Brodie: I've got a younger sister tooit's a big re= sponsibility, being the eldest. Garth: Yeah, especially with Bree. But Vee is older than me, and she mostly takes care of her. What's your sister's name? Brodie: Ionashe's four years younger than me. Garth: Bree is only two and I'm eight, but I'm the man of the house now, so I take care of them all. Brodie: That's a noble thing for you to say::He rocked Tyl= er slightly::just try not to grow up too fast. Garth: I ... have to. The twins father left them, all of us, and Mother too. I have to teach Tyler how to be a man. I promised Hannibal I'd take care of them. ::Brodie could see how Hannibal night inspire that kind of thing, especially in one so young. He was strong, physically as well as being resolute, and the image of the Starfleet marine didn't do anything = to change that image. Strength came in many forms, however, and you didn=E2=80= =99t have to have the blood of Kahless in your veins to be strong..:: Brodie: Ah, a promisethat's a big ask for anyone. Garth: Taking care of Mother is hard. She's always off on a mission, and I can't go with her. ::His tough facade crumbling under the tears welling in the corner of his eyes.:: She cries at night when she thinks we're sleeping. I don't know how to make her stop. ::That comment caught Brodie by surprise. He wasn't privy to much o= f the Admirals private life. He was aware she had several children, he was cradling one and talking to another after all. Thinking back to that first time at her home, however, there were a lot of pictures of the children but few of anyone he would have recognized as a father. Initially he had thought she had been involved with Hannibal.:: Brodie: Well, everyone has times when they're upset. Garth: ::crying openly:: Yeah, but now she's hurt. I'm not doing a very good job. Brodie: Heyhey now. You can't blame yourself for what happ= ened. ::He put his arm around Garth as he slid down from the sofa and onto the floor:: It looks like you're doing a pretty good job to me. Garth: ??? Brodie: Your mum was really worried about you guys earlier todaywi= ld horses wouldn't have been able to keep her from coming to be with y= ou guys to make sure you were safe. She got here, and who had looked after the others to make sure they were okay? ::He pointed a finger at Garth:: Garth: ??? Brodie: That's right. Listen, you're doing welljus= t try not to put too much onto yourself. Sometimes just being thereis what really matte= rs. Not big gestures, not grand speeches or saving people like a herojust = being there for the one's you love. ::It occurred to Alex, in light of what Garth had said, that Rear Admiral Toni Turner could probably do with the same speech. Life's too shor= t to be hard on yourself.:: Garth: ??? ::Alex looked down at the sleeping figure in the cradle of his elbow.:: Brodie: It's been a long day hasn't it, Garth? Garth: ???
